U.S. Mission Nigeria Visits Chess in Slums: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy Through Chess

On Monday, January 20, 2025, Chess in Slums Africa had the distinct honor of hosting the U.S. Mission Nigeria at our Innovation Hub to celebrate the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event brought together diplomats, visionaries, and our young champions to reflect on and uphold the values of equality, justice, and perseverance that Dr. King stood for.

One of the most remarkable moments of the event was seeing our champions introduce the game of chess to members of the U.S. Mission Nigeria who were new to the game. A particularly heartwarming highlight was when Jamiu, one of our champions, had the opportunity to teach Ambassador Richard Mills how to play chess. Additionally, three of our champions delivered powerful speeches, articulating how Dr. King’s teachings have influenced their lives and aspirations. Further enriching the event was the participation of the Founder and Youth President of Chess and Community from Athens, Georgia. Their presence, facilitated through our UBUNTU Cultural Exchange Initiative, reinforced the unifying power of chess in building bridges across continents.
